Building a Raspberry Trellis (That Actually Looks Good)
One of my goals this year has been building the perfect garden—and that means both function and aesthetics. Over the winter, I transplanted some raspberry canes to my new home. Come spring, I realized they needed support—and fast. But after scrolling through dozens of store-bought trellises online, I couldn’t find anything I liked the look of. So I built my own.
This project was surprisingly simple—it came together in just half a day and gave me something sturdy, practical, and far better-looking than anything I could’ve ordered.
Why I Built My Own
This trellis design is a bit of a Frankenstein in the best way. I pulled inspiration from a few different DIY plans I found online, then adapted them to fit my needs. That’s one of the best things about projects like this—you can pick and choose your favorite elements, adjust the scale, and make it your own.
I ended up with a clean, structured look that complements the rest of the garden and gives the raspberries plenty of space to grow.
The Build: Simple and Solid
The materials are all common and easy to source. The frame is made from pressure-treated 4x4s (more on that in a second), and the support comes from sturdy galvanized wire strung through eye bolts on upper and lower crossbeams. I notched the crossbeams and posts for a secure fit, bolted everything together, and set it into the ground. It’s super stable and should last for years.

A Note on Pressure-Treated Wood
I used new pressure-treated lumber because it holds up well in the elements—especially in our damp PNW climate. But I know some folks prefer untreated wood for edible gardens. If that’s more your jam, go with untreated cedar or redwood for a naturally rot-resistant option. Just be aware they’ll weather faster and might not last as long.
Final Thoughts
This was one of those satisfying, low-effort, high-reward projects. It didn’t require a ton of fancy tools, and the results instantly upgraded the garden space. If you’ve got raspberries (or blackberries or even tomatoes!) that need some vertical support, this trellis might be the perfect weekend build.
